Beijing Photo Gallery - Forbidden City #2

Many artifacts inside the palace were shipped to Taiwan when the Nationalist government fled. They couldn't move the large items, such as these.

The main buildings line along the central axis one-by-one. Here is a close-up of the Hall of Supreme Harmony.

Look back again, and the Gate of Supreme Harmony is back a long way ago.

This place is a photographer's paradise. The Hall of Central Harmony and Hall of Preserving Harmony sit on top of a raised podium to amplify the effect.

The weather was so good that the city's tallest building across town was visible.

From the top of the podium, look across to see the orange-roof buildings stretch around you.

The interiors of these large buildings so far don't allow visitors inside. Actually, many of the artifacts were evacuated away during World War II and the subsequent civil war. Some wounded up in Taiwan, where they are on display in Taipei today.

Look back again and check out the amazing podium effect.

You can't possibly fall off the edge of the podium with these tall ledges.

Behind it is a rest area. This is only half way through the axis.

In the distance, Jingshan Park offers a panoramic view of the entire Forbidden City. However, the afternoon light is against me so it would not be as clear looking against back from up there.
