Buffalo was founded by the French in the 18th century and thrived at the beginning of the 20th century thanks to power from nearby Niagara Falls and its railway gateway to the Great Lakes. Architectural masterpieces and a beautiful park system were created. However, once the St. Lawrence Seaway opened, the city fell into decline, although attempts to revitalize downtown are starting to show results.
