Kuala Lumpur Chinatown Photo Gallery

Chinese history is this part of KL began in 1870 when Yap Ah Loy opened a tapioca mill on Petaling Street. Many Chinese migrants arrived around this time for the tin mining industry as miners or traders. As the community grew, the entertainment industry also blossomed by the 1940s, with KL featuring on tours by Hong Kong and Chinese actresses to perform in the area's theatres.

Geographically located on higher ground that helped reduce flood impacts, the area used to be ruled by the Chinese kapitans (headmen) before the British took over. Other ethnic groups also played a part, with the Sikhs policing the area.

This street is now a pedestrian shopping market and Chinatown has spread across neighbouring streets. Once seedier where traders sold counterfeit goods, it has been under transformation in recent years with adapting businesses and new, trendier attractions.

REXKL sits on a former theatre the first opened in 1947 and rebuilt in the 1970s as a state-of-the-art facility with a capacity of over 1000 people. Its story ended in 2002 due to fire, only to be rescued by a group of young entrerpreneurs to revitalize the building into a community space, food, and retail destination.
