Krakow Nowa Huta Photo Gallery

Nowa Huta was conceived by the Soviets as a model city. Approved in 1947, it eventually became a model city for 100,000 residents living alongside tree-lined avenues, many parks, and functional architecture.

The Steelworks employed 40,000 at its peak and was a vital economic driver in the community.

Plac Centralny was built in 1949 as the area's central square. Impressed by the symmetry and uniformity surrounding it, it actually was supposed to be more imposing had some of the planned buildings were actually built.

Meanwhile, one side of the square remains empty.

I suppose after the Soviets left, they got Americanized instead.

Capitalism has arrived.

Within this time warp is a traditional restaurant still stuck in its retro furnishings. I came early in the morning so it was empty, but imagine on an evening, or on a weekend, when the singers and dancers are out for a good time.

Life in the district is showcased in a small museum just a few blocks from the central square. The ticket will also get you into the PRL Museum nearby. Nowa Huta played a major part in the Solidarity movement.

Fearing attack during the Cold War, shelters were built beneath Nowa Huta that could accomodate every single resident. The museum's basement pays tribute to this defense network.
