Lisbon Photo Gallery - Alfama's Alleys and Stairs

The Alfama is east of the historic centre and sprawls along the hills. The narrow alleys and many staircases that traverse the neighbourhood are best experienced on foot. There are still locals living here, and you will see them climbing the stairs, hanging their laundry, and maintaining the area's charm.

Hopefully, this place won't turn into a Venice, with residents being displaced by visitors staying in converted bnb's.

While my guidebook mentioned this area can get dangerous at night, I never felt unsafe during my daytime visit. I thought a living neighborhood couldn't get that bad when it gets dark.

On the way down, I went into the Sé, or cathedral, for a look.

From here, it is only a short downhill stroll back to Baixa.
