The "upper city" is as historic as the Alfama and has many narrow alleys and gritty streetscapes. It's a colourful area and has a decent nightlife as well.

Being uphill, there are also many spots with views of the city below.

Be sure to explore the side streets like in the Alfama.

The Carmo Convent dates from the 14th century and was devastated by the 1755 earthquake, and what we see today are the skeletal ruins.
