Starting at Camden Town station on the Northern Line, you quickly see the colourful facades on High Street's buildings. This area was named after the first Earl Camden, Charles Pratt, who began developing the town in 1791. Its importance grew upon the Regent Canal's opening in 1820, and Camden Town became a trade and industrial centre. Its markets were a relatively recent addition in the 1970s.
The Buck Street market is made up of stacked shipping containers and primarily sells food.
Continuing along High Street, there are few signs of punk culture that once dominated the area. That history goes back to 1976 at the Roundhouse, which was a hotspot for counter-culture. Musical performances by the likes of Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix were held here.
Hawley Wharf lies on the north side of Regent's Canal and has been revitalized from an underused market into a mix of shopping and residential buildings.
