Windsor & Eton Central is 1 of 2 working stations within walking distance from the castle. In the 1840s, 2 transport companies competed against each other to open rail service to win Queen Victoria's favour, although she was wary trains would bring pollution and criminals to town, but in the end the 2 stations were built for the 2 companies, and the Crown benefited as they had to pay their way to build on its land.Great Western Railway built a branch from Slough to end here, opening in 1849 and rebuilt in 1879. Today, most of the train station has been converted into a shopping mall. South Western Railway's terminus is on the other side of town at Windsor & Eton Riverside.
Being a major tourist mecca thanks to the royal residence, neighbouring streets are full of shops and restaurants.
The River Thames runs just north of town, and is a good spot for a picturesque photo of the castle. The Normans had already regarded this area as important due to the river trade route to the countryside.
The castle itself charges a hefty admission, like many attractions in the London area. Windsor Castle was founded in the 11th century by William the Conqueror and has been home to 40 monarchs.
A statue of Queen Victoria stands proud at the entrance to Castle Hill. It was unveiled for her Golden Jubilee in 1887.
