Madrid Photo Gallery - Part 4
Located in the centre of Spain, my trip to Madrid was mostly spent on day trips in surrounding historic towns. My last day in the country was devoted solely to this city, which meant I didn't have time to explore the museums but to skim through the main sites and walk a lot.Spain has an impressive high-speed train network, with new and clean stations. Trains to Toledo depart from Atocha station south of the historic centre. Built in the 1880s, it was enhanced in the early 1990s with a tropical garden installation, making it look very lush today.
Trains for Segovia depart from Chamartin on the north side of the city.
There are also a few skyscrapers in the area.
The metro network is extensive and easy to use. It goes right to the airport as well. In March 2004, almost 200 people were killed when 10 bombs exploded during the morning rush hour. It was believed a militant Islamic extremist group was responsible for the attack to punish Spain for sending troops to Iraq.
