Toledo Photo Gallery - Part 1

Toledo and Segovia are easy day trips from Madrid. Having landed from Portugal the day before, I picked Toledo first, which is an easy 30 minute journey by high-speed train. However, it was a long wait for a manual counter in Madrid to buy that ticket as the machines didn't work for this route.

Toledo's train station is just a short walk from the historic town.

Located on a hill and surrounded by the Tajo River, Toledo was Spain's capital until 1561 and is now a major tourist attraction. There is plenty of nice architecture, so I expected to go on a photo-taking frenzy. The town isn't too big and can be seen in a day, but prepare for a lot of walking and wandering around the medieval maze of alleys.

The Alcázar fortress dates from the 16th century and occupies the highest point in town. What we see is a reconstruction by Franco as the building was destroyed during the Civil War.

During the war in 1936, Nationalists sought refuge in the Alcázar, along with women, children, and hostages. Low on food but secure within the fortress, they were saved when Franco sent an army over to help.

While there are a few key sights to visit, the joy of exploring these medieval towns is to wander around the streets and alleys to soak up the atmosphere.
