Churches of Rome Photo Gallery Part 1

Rome has no shortage of amazing churches and after going through this set, I don't think I will ever be as amazed with churches elsewhere on the continent, albeit with a few rare exceptions only.

Dating from the 9th century, the Basilica di Santa Prassede is famous for its Byzantine mosaics and is dedicated to a hero who saved Christians fleeing persecution.

The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore sits on top of Esquiline Hill. Legend says that a rich couple was told by the Virgin Mary in a dream that a miracle would show where to build a church that they wanted to dedicate in her honour. That miracle was a hill covered in snow.

Sant Andrea al Quirinale was approved by Pope Alexander VII Chigi and designed by Bernini with an elliptical floor plan. The late 17th century church was one of Bernini's greatest creations with its mix of architecture and art.
