Arendal has historically been a major port on the southern coast with a thriving timber export trade. Before the steamship era, it had the country's largest fleet and was a major shipbuilding centre as well.
Today, the area around the harbour is a tourist attraction. Tyholmen is the old town with wooden houses and small alleys. Back in the day, merchants and shipowners lived near the waterfront while workers lived uphill.
