Athens Photo Gallery - Roman Agora

Greece Flag

Athens is full of historic sites to explore and beyond the Acropolis, there are many more places to see around it.

The Roman Agora was built in the 1st century BC to move the commercial centre of the city from the Ancient Agora about 100m away. Donors included Julius Caesar and Augustus. The rectangular market is fronted by the Gate of Athena Archegetis, now fairly well preserved. On the eastern part of the site is the octagonal Tower of the Winds that once served as a water-powered clock, church, and monastery for the Ottoman Dervishes.
