Ayutthaya Photo Gallery - Wat Mahathat

Thai Flag

Wat Mahathat was built for a great relic, perhaps the Buddha's remains. It was built on the edge of the royal palace and considered one of the capital's most important temples. Featuring Khmer architecture, the central spire once stood 43m high and collapsed a few times.

Many come here to see the Buddha's head wedged in the tree at the temple's southeast corner. The statue arrived first and the tree grew around it.
