Ayutthaya Photo Gallery - Wihan Phra Mongkhon Bophit & Wat Phra Si Sanphet

Thai Flag

Wihan Phra Mongkhon Bophit is home to a large 12.45m high bronze Buddha statue. The hall is quite modern, built in the 1950s with the Burmese's assistance, which is ironic because their ancestors sacked Ayutthaya 200 years earlier. The statue had previously been exposed outside after the Burmese invasion.

Wat Phra Si Sanphet was built in the mid-15th century as a private chapel. Grand it must have been, i was named after a standing metal image of the Buddha that had 173kg of gold. After the Burmese invasion, pieces were rescued and placed in Bangkok's Wat Pho. The ashes of 3 kings are also buried here in chedis.
