Monte da Guia

Just behind the whaling station and a short walk uphill on a paved road is Monte da Guia, a good elevated position to see Horta and the coastline. This was a volcano that merged with the island, with a church dedicated to the patron saint of fishermen and sailors. The church has platforms overlooking the city as well as the caldera on the other side.

Pico's volcano rises in the distance. The top can be elusive, oftentimes shrouded in clouds.
