Stretching 62km long and 15km wide, Sao Miguel is the largest island in the Azores. The northern part of the island has fewer attractions, but with a car, it's only a short drive from Ponta Delgada to explore.
Today's itinerary is to explore the western edge of the island for the morning. I had previously gone uphill to Sete Cidades already so would stay along the coast this time. It took about an hour to drive from Ponta Delgada to Mosteiros beach, which is named after volcanic islets offshore that look like ancient church towers rising from the sea. The area was formed by cooling lava from volcanic eruptions, giving the area a black colour.
