Ubud is Bali's cultural heartland. The royal family encouraged foreign artists to come and find the real Bali, and they did from the 1930s. Nowadays, this is the shopping location for local handicrafts. Puri Saren is the royal palace. The royal family still owns a few hotels and hosts lavish ceremonies. Plenty of souvenirs were available at Ubud Market but beware the narrow and dirty alleys.
