Berlin Photo Gallery - Hackescher Markt

In brick and terracotta colours, Hackescher Markt station opened in 1882 as part of the 12km-long Stadtbahn from Carlottenburg to Ostbahnhof. This area used to be outside the city limits where hay and straw were stored in barns.

A short walk away, Hackesche Hofe is a set of 8 renovated courtyards that now host interesting shops and restaurants. They were designed by Kurt Berndt in the early 20th century that mixed commercial and residential uses, an innovative concept at the time driven by the need to diversify rental sources. It also had central heating and on-site power generation. This is the largest single courtyard complex in the country with plenty of Art Nouveau designs.
