Designed by Charles Bulfinch, State House was completed in 1798 and served as an inspiration for many more capitol buildings across the country. It hosts free public tours although you are also welcome to visit on your own and enter the House and Senate Chambers' public viewing galleries.Originally plated in copper to prevent water leakage, the dome was gilded in 23-carat gold in 1872.
The stained glass window on the Grand Staircase depicts the state's early seals, with the oldest being a 1629 design. The window panels showcase the personal coats of arms of the provincial governors.
The Great Hall was built in 1990 with a glass dome for state functions.
The Memorial Hall was dedicated in 1900 and is topped by a stained glass window from Ford and Brooks, a leading local studio at the time.
