Taichung Photo Gallery - Changhua Roundhouse

Changhua Roundhouse is particularly unique as it is a working rail yard for the TRA yet it is open to tourists to see it in action. While most other roundhouses were demolished as steam trains were phased out, Changhua's has been saved and is just a short walk from the city's main station.

Built in 1922, this roundhouse used to have 6 bays, expanding to 12 in the 1930s. All of them are still in use today, but for maintaining TRA's diesel and electric trains, although some steam locomotives are still parked here.

There is even an observation platform built for tourists to enjoy the action.

Changhua is only a short train ride away from Taichung's main train station on the slower TRA trains, taking as little as 13 minutes. It's free admission to the site but do respect the cordoned-off areas and watch for oncoming trains when you are on the tracks!
