Chiang Mai Photo Gallery - Doi Inthanon

Rising 2565m above sea level, Doi Inthanon is Thailand's highest mountain and is a cool retreat from Chiang Mai. Without your own wheels, take a local tour from the city for a whirlwind drive up the mountain.

The Karen tribe lives on these slopes, and the typical tourist itinerary would include a visit to their village. They grew opium in the 1950s but were encouraged to transition to growing rice, coffee, and flowers.

Waterfalls are the highlight of this national park. Wachirathan is 80m high and gives off a cool spray into the summer heat.

A short walking trail runs around the highest point of the mountain, which is actually quite chilly so your summer clothing from the city will not be enough. You are in the middle of the forest, so there are no views.

The Thai Air Force built 2 chedis to celebrate the Thai king and queen's 60th birthdays, with the king's monument, Napamaytanidol Chedi, built in 1987 and the queen's, Napapolphumsiri Chedi, built in 1992.

The last stop of the day was a botanical garden just as the typical afternoon downpour arrives.
