Not many cities build monorails nowadays, but Chongqing's Line 2 is immensely popular, especially at one station where the suspended tracks enter a multi-storey building. Below, crowds of visitors take photos of trains seemingly entering their mouths, which has turned into a social media sensation.

Line 2 was China's first monorail and Chongqing's first mass transit line when the 12.5km route opened in 2005. It hugs along the rugged southern banks of the Jialing River so it is quite scenic.

In 1992, the Japan International Cooperation Agency performed a feasibility study with Chinese authorities and decided a straddle-type monorail was appropriate due to the hilly terrain and sharp bends. Hitachi worked with Changchun Railway Vehicles Co. Ltd to produce the rolling stock. However, 2 prototype trains were imported from Japan.
