Surrounded by a clean ocean, there is plenty of seafood to enjoy at rock-bottom prices. However, I wasn't ready to try this type of street food.
There are some very decent restaurants in beautiful settings where I feel safer to dine.
The historic Mount Lavinia Hotel has a stunning waterfront location south of the city. Even if you won't stay here, it is still worth the trip to try out its seafood restaurant on the beach. Pick the day's catch, and enjoy the ocean waves while you feast.
The city centre is still quite a distance away. The Governor General of Ceylon lived here in 1806, and future governors expanded it until it became the hotel.
Luckily, a delicious and very fulfilling meal won't cost an arm and a leg by international standards.
Back in the city, Cinnamon Red also has a nice rooftop lounge with a view. There aren't too many tall buildings in the city.
The infinity pool is quite decent and is great after a day of sightseeing.
Other hotels in the area also command decent views despite being on a low floor.
The Kingsbury enjoys a waterfront location in the city centre with 229 rooms at this star hotel. It is not a historic building, having opened in 2013, but its rooftop bar is a great place to watch the sunset and the busy Galle Face Green waterfront park.
