Copenhagen Photo Gallery - Metro

Copenhagen is not a big city but I needed to rely on its metro system every now and then. The concept of building a metro system here dates back to 1902, but it took until the early 1990s for plans to take shape.

The system opened in 2002 with fully-automated driverless trains. The M1 and M2 lines opened in phases between 2002 and 2007 that stretch over 21km. Expansions followed, with the M3 opening in 2019 and the M4 in 2020. 135 million passengers used the system in 2025.

The M1 (green) line heads out to Orestad and its stunning residential architecture.

There are no ticketing gates and passengers are expected to ride under an honour system.

Besides the metro system, I also used the train network, which offers a faster short-cut from the airport to Orestad. Trains also run across the bridge to Malmo in Sweden.
