Copenhagen Photo Gallery - Nordhavn

Just a short ride on the metro from the city centre is a new neighbourhood with a diverse range of residential architecture and plenty of waterfront promenades at your doorstep. Despite swimming being banned along much of this coastline, there were plenty of people sunbathing when I arrived.

COBE Architects, Sleth, Rambøll and Polyform won the competition to design this 2 sq km area in 2008, and they brought forward a fairly car-free concept to this former industrial wasteland. The vision is a residential suburb for 40,000 and work spaces as well, and a 5-minute city with a 400m radius around the metro station, which opened in 2020.

It's still a work in progress though, with plenty of warehouses and a container port to repurpose. The whole project is expected to finish by 2060.

The Silo was previously a grain silo but now repurposed into a 17-storey luxury residential block with a restaurant on the top.

One of the highlights is a parking lot with a playground on the roof, a good use of an otherwise dead space. Konditaget Luders is 24m above the street designed for kids living in an area where there isn't much room for them to enjoy on the ground.

Portland Towers are 52m tall and were previously silos built in 1979 to store cement. After a renovation in 2013-4, they are now offices with the new building attached to the outside of the silos.

The waterfront at Sandkaj overlooking Nordhavn Bassin was extremely busy with people enjoying the summer sun. There is a section where swimming was allowed as well. If getting a tan is not your thing, grab a bite at the several restaurants overlooking the water.
