Ørestad (Vestamager station)

Ørestad is a great place to see a new suburb being built from scratch. The ambitious urban development scheme south of the medieval centre takes place on the island of Amager on a site less than 5km long and half a km wide.

Connected by the metro and only 10 minutes to reach Kongens Nytorv, you are immediately out of the hustle and bustle but in a very residential neighbourhood with a sprinkle of office buildings and international brand hotels. There is interesting architecture all along the M1 line after leaving Christianshavn.

Surrounded by nature reserve, you don't feel intimidated by the density and the architectural wonders keep your eyes busy.

Vestamager is the southern terminus of the M1 line where the city finishes and the nature reserve starts. 8 House is a 10-storey residential building with 476 units that is shaped like an "8" with front-row views of the open space. However, the pressures of tourists coming to see the architecture are evident with signs reminding non-residents to visit only during a short period of daytime away from the rush hour. For groups of less than 6 people, visit from 10am-4pm on weekdays only and don't come on public holidays.

There are a lot more residential buildings in the area to explore. I walked along the canal from north to south and finished at the metro station.

Upcycle Studios is a set of rowhouses built using waste building materials such as old windows, concrete, and wood. Saving 1000 tons of waste from going to the landfill, it is a showcase of sustainable development.

I set my eyes on a multi-storey parking lot across the street with an external staircase that would offer a good and free view of the area.

The streets had a fair amount of pedestrians and cyclists during the early morning as both adults and children start their day.
