Cirencester was the 2nd largest Roman town in Britain after London and is known today as the capital of the Cotswolds. It became an important wool town during the Middle Ages and features the typical honey-coloured stone buildings in the region. The Parish Church of St. John Baptist has a long history with the oldest parts dating back to the 12th century, the tower is from the 15th, while the nave was rebuilt in the early 16th. A separate 3-storey south porch was built in the late 15th century as an office but also served as the town hall.
The church anchors Market Place with the retail street extending both west and east from here.
