Chipping Campden's town plan dates from the late 12th century with the trade route along High Street designed by Hugh De Gondeville, under charter from King Henry II. The name comes from "campadene", Saxon for cultivated valley, and "ceapen", Old English for market.
The Market Hall was built in 1627 by Sir Baptist Hicks to provide shelter for the merchants who typically traded cheese, butter, and poultry. Peek inside at the worn stone after centuries of activity.
