The Al-Ahmadiya School was founded in 1912 as the UAE's first public school. Many leaders were educated here, although only the wealthy families needed to pay. Today, its traditional architecture has survived and is open as a museum. Nearby Heritage House is a restored 19th century structure fully-furnished to depict traditional life in a Dubai mansion. Deira district was founded in 1841 when residents from across the creek in Bur Dubai came to establish a new village. It was the city's main commercial centre and still hosts a multicultural demographic and many vibrant markets. The Deira Fish, Meat and Vegetable Market is quite photogenic although smelly at parts.
