Sheikh Zayed Road is the grand avenue that crosses Dubai from west to east. Skyscrapers line both sides uniformly, which creates an interesting linear cityscape.
The sides of this wide highway are generally walkable, but cross safely on the bridges.
Emirates Towers opened in 2000 with the taller of the 2 towers home to the city's largest airline, while a hotel is in the shorter tower.
After walking a few kilometres, take a break on the air-conditioned metro, which runs on elevated tracks next to this highway, offering magnificent views of the skyline. The metro's vehicles are automated, and there are big windows at both ends of the train to enjoy the view. However, these are now either the women's carriage or the more expensive Gold Class.
The Al Yaquob Tower is a modern re-make of London's Big Ben, but stretched much taller to 330m.
