Dublin Photo Gallery - Trinity College

Trinity College was created by royal charter in 1592 with the hope its graduates can be tapped as future civil servants. Under English rule, bringing a university to Ireland would bring it closer to European trends and strengthen the Reformation efforts.

This new institution was built to the east of the walled city and got a lot more space than initially needed. Despite various interruptions over the centuries, a building boom in the 18th century created a number of classical buildings.

In 2021-2, there were over 20,000 registered students with 70% of them in undergraduate programs.

Unless they are admitting a lot of mature students, the campus was busy with tourists, many of whom came for the library and the Book of Kells, which will set you back 26 euros as of 2024.
