Gwangju Photo Gallery - Yangdong Market

Yangdong Market's history goes back to the 1910s. It became famous during the May 18th democracy movement when activists gathered here demanding freedom.

Traditional items are plentiful. This is a working local market and not geared towards tourists.

The market caters to all your grocery needs, even stocking up seafood despite not being on the coast.

The vegetable stalls are more interesting with workers sorting through all sorts of big and small bundles.

I always like to wander around the kimchi stores to see their many varieties in stock. I wasn't even sure if all of these are kimchi.

All the interesting items for sale in this market can keep your eyes busy for hours.

Dried seafood has its own long arcade and stores are dotted elsewhere, too.

Koreans love their spicy foods, and you can get dried chili at wholesale quantities.

Then find another few alleys selling grains.

Outside, there are restaurants and various shops selling other household items. A hardware store street extends further out from the main market.
