Every day at noon, the naval gun is fired into the harbour by a Jardine Matheson employee. The company was founded in the 1830s and deals across many industries from real esate to retail. This tradition is said to have originated when a Royal Naval Officer didn't like staff firing shots when their company boss sailed into the harbour, and the daily salute was imposed on them as punishment. Another origin story mentioned it was to salute the company head when he entered or left the building, while yet another one was intended to be a time check. The land that the gun sits on is still owned by the company. It was the first piece of land sold to a Western private company in the city.
The gun now sits in an enclosure which is open to the public for about half an hour around the daily firing.
