Hong Kong Photo Gallery - HKMA Information Centre

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), the city's de-facto central bank, occupies the top section of the iconic Two IFC building in Central. They are responsible for authorizing, regulating, and supervising the banking business in the city, while the securities business is regulated by a separate entity, the SFC.

It has a publicly-accessible Information Centre offering free entry with an exhibition as well as plenty of big windows for a good view from the 55th floor. The exhibition area is divided into 3 themes :
1. policy section
2. currency section (about the money in use in Hong Kong)
3. historical timeline from 1842 to now

While Hong Kong has not yet gone entirely cashless like many parts of Western Europe, electronic payments are increasingly popular, although it's usually on the local Octopus smart card, which can be used from paying at a small shop to getting entry to your housing estate or office. $1000 bills used to be shunned and not accepted at a lot of places, and locals typically ask beforehand to see if they accept a $500 bill as well.

Hong Kong's money is printed by the 3 main banks : HSBC, Bank of China, and Standard Chartered. The colours are standardized across the denominations but the design differs by bank.

Many are drawn by the huge windows to enjoy these views. You are nowhere near the top of the building though - the top floor is the 88th.
