While hikers and tourists marvel at the views from Lugard Road, there is a hiking path up to an even higher viewpoint that opens up towards the west and sunset. This short hike begains at a nice small park where Harlech and Lugard Roads meet. While it appears short, it zaps out much more energy than the distance marker says, and the name of the path gives a hint of what's to come. Take the Treacherous Trail into the woods. The initial section is relatively flat and easy.
The most difficult part is a long steep staircase where there are signs to show your slow progress.
The Peak Galleria is quite a distance away.
On the way up, the view opens up towards the south but you can't see the main skyline yet.
At the end of the gruelling climb, you will see a bit of the skyline on the right, but the way the hills are structured, this is not a higher version of the Lugard Road view.
The view opens up primarily to the western end of the island and Kowloon because the mountain is in the way further east.
The top at 494m has a flat surface to enjoy the views while the more adventurous hike beyond the rope down further west for sunset.
This is a short but steep hike that is quite stressful on your legs because of the long staircase. Nevertheless, if you are making a loop on Lugard Road, add an extra hour to two to go up High West for a different perspective, especially when it is sunset time. While you are visiting the Peak, take note that bus 15 heading back to Central offers free interchange to route 6 bound for Stanley. |
