The government started looking for further growth areas for Tung Chung in 2012. They decided on an eastern extension that will include reclaiming 130 hectares of land for 40,000 new flats.
The current site east of Tung Chung MTR station consists of 3 major housing estates wrapped around the North Lantau Highway. More infill projects are slowly taking shape, and the area has become a large residential community.

A nice waterfront promenade only stretches along a small section around the pier where ferries to Tai O depart. There is still a lot of construction in the area.

Unlike many parts of the city, there is plenty of open space and parkland around these large estates.

A Sheraton is under construction by the waterfront, albeit a bit far from the airport.

Reclamation works are well under way.
