Hue Photo Gallery - Khai Dinh's Tomb

Khai Dinh ruled from 1916 until 1925 and his tomb spreads along the hillside. Completed in 1931 with both Western and European architectural styles, the predominant use of black concrete adds to a mysterious Gothic atmosphere. Incredible mosaics adorne the interiors. However, construction was financed from a 30% tax increase.

Inside, the walls and ceilings are magnificently decorated with murals and sculptures.

Khai Dinh was quite pro-French, noting his country was too behind technologically and they needed to understand French and Western civilization to stand on its own feet. He is buried 18m under the gilt bronze statue cast in Marseilles.
