Welcome to Lijiang

Lijiang is unique among China's ancient cities as it does not have a city wall. This is because the Chinese character of "Mu", the ruling family of the town, would become the character for "siege" if it is framed, like a wall. So the Mu family made the conscious decision to keep the town wall-free.
