Taking off towards the south, the best views of Lisbon's historic district are actually on the left side of the plane, but since we were heading north to London, we looped around south of the Tagus and the whole city unfolded under my right window.
Belem is famous for attractions related to Portugal's Age of Discovery, which saw the country's maritime golden age and now home to UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The 2300m-long Ponte 25 de Abril was built by the same company as San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge and opened in 1966. The current name was adopted later in memory of the 1974 revolution that ended the country's dictatorship.
