Lisbon Photo Gallery - St. George's Castle
Believed to be the site where Lisbon started, the Moors built fortifications here in the 11th century. After the Moors were drive out in 1147, subsequent Portuguese kings adapted the castle for royal functions, and later for military uses.
It is quite pleasant to walk along the walls to enjoy the wide city views. Here are some more looking west and north.
Looking south, the Tagus is not far away. The Portuguese were avid seafarers, starting the European voyages of discovery that led them to new faraway lands.
This place is a great reward for climbing along Alfama's hilly streets and staircases.
