London Photo Gallery - Banksy's Artworks (August 2024)

Street artist Banksy started unveiling a series of animal-themed works on August 5, 2024. Every day for the next 9 days, a new work around London would come to light.

Banksy's rise to fame started in the early 1990s when his designs started popping up in Bristol. Some had political messages embedded within and soon, the world noticed. Although he painted in anonymity, the media have tried to find out who the man is behind these famous works. In 2003, the BBC asked if he was called "Robert Banks".

Not all his recent works have survived though. One looked like it was stolen shortly after it was installed while another was dismantled quickly.

August 6 - 2 elephants reach for each other on the side of a residential building (Edith Grove near Earl's Court).

August 7 - 3 monkeys hang from a railway bridge (Brick Lane near Shoreditch High Street station) in an area with plenty of street art already.

August 11 - Swimming piranhas appear on a police box, which were cordoned off initially. The box was then moved to another place shortly after I took these photos (Ludgate Hill).

August 12 - A rhino mounts a damaged car in an industrial area near Woolwich in southeast London (Westmoor Street). It was vandalized shortly after unveiling and by the time I reached the work a day later, a set of crew was putting up a protective film on it, the car has disappeared, and the police drove in for a patrol.
