A cheaper, slower, but more scenic way to travel around is by bus. According to the bus fleet audit released in March 2024, there were almost 8800 buses operating in London, of which 1398 were electric and 6261 were double deckers. Routes are operated by a number of private operators, with the largest by fleet size being Arriva, Go Ahead, Metroline, RATP, and Stagecoach.Fares are uniform and contactless payment, such as credit cards, is accepted. In 2024, the base fare reached 1.75 pounds, which allows unlimited journeys within an hour of tapping in for the first time. The New Routemaster bus was commissioned by the Mayor of London in 2010 with a 40% fuel savings target and more efficient loading. The first buses of the 1000 vehicle order came on the streets in 2012.
However, London is not built to handle even small amounts of snow. Traffic comes to a crawl and the trains grind to a halt after a small storm.
Regent Street is a great place to spot buses. Many parts have a small median to stand and photograph the many buses coming into their stops amidst a setting of historic buildings and Christmas lights.
With a lot of traffic along narrow Bond Street, it's also a good location to spot slow-moving vehicles.
