Segovia Photo Gallery - Part 1
Toledo and Segovia are easy day trips from Madrid. Having landed from Portugal the day before, After an exhausting outing in Toledo, I headed to Segovia the next day. Access was just as easy thanks to a high-speed train connection.Segovia's history dates beyond the Roman and Moorish eras, and was a royal residence during the 13th century. 166 arches and 120 pillars hold the Roman aqueduct up to 30m above the street. Stretching over 800m long, this is an impressive greeting and an exciting start to another packed day trip.
Similar to Toledo, this is the type of place where you need to wander the streets to absorb the atmosphere. I headed west across town to see the main sights.
The 12th century San Martin Church has an arched gallery and Mudéjar tower with Christian and Muslim styles.
Continuing west, it is only a short walk to the next grand attraction.
Plaza Mayor, the square that fronts the cathedral, is a good mid-way rest stop to the western end of town. It was still early so it appears completing all my sightseeing within a day is achievable. While some restaurants set up chairs along the edges, there was still plenty of open space to move about.
Construction for the Catedral began in 1525 and took 200 years to finish.
