Malta Photo Gallery - Rabat

Rabat is located just adjacent to the historic Mdina. Its name means "suburb" in Arabic, which is quite correct as it was an extension from the walled city.

Just off the Mdina's walls is the Domvs Romana, the remains of a Roman townhouse that was found in 1881 and dates from the 1st century BC. Some of the mosaics have survived and are on display in th is small museum.

The streets are quiet during the day but it will be far more busy at night when the bars and street market opens.

St. Paul's Church was bult in 1675 and its grotto underneath is believed to be the cave where the saint preached during his visit to Malta.

Around here, the town gets less touristy with more shops geared towards the local population.

Under Roman law, burials had to take place outside the city, and St. Paul's Catacombs was built as a burial ground in the 7th and 8th centuries.
