Matsumoto Photo Gallery

Matsumoto is a good gateway city to the Japanese Alps and the scenic Kurobe Alpine Route. Matsumoto Castle dates from the late 16th century and its black-and-white colours are quite distinct even today, giving it a nickname of "Crow Castle". The Alps rise in the distance.

The City Museum is next to the castle and showcases the city's local history.

The Kaichi School was built in 1876 and provided education to everyone. During this era, higher education was only accessible to the samurai class while ordinary citizens were educated at temples. The community's farmers wanted to change this, so they donated most of the building's cost.

Across the street, there is another small historic house with simple Western furnishings.

Hotel Buena Vista is tall enough to command a nice view. There are dining options on the top floor.

Kaiundo was established in 1884 and continues to sell Japanese and Western candies today. They even have an ice cream robot that scoops and serves you without any human intervention.
