Muscat Photo Gallery - Mutrah

Oman Flag

Mutrah is Muscat's old commercial hub. Unlike the old port that was hard to access by land, this part could be reached by camel caravans, which continued until the 1960s. The attractions are within walking distance and the beautiful corniche is worth a stroll.

Finding a parking spot along the street can be difficult. Head to the fish souk instead, which is just a short walk from the attractions.

Across the street, I went to one of the top-rated restaurants serving local food in a rather low-profile building, but the crowds knew about this place already.

The cruise ships dock a short distance away from here.

Continue down along the waterfront Al Bahri Road towards the old souq, the largest in the country.

The souk is nowhere near Istanbul's Grand Bazaar, though it can still get quite busy when the cruise ships are in town. The main entrance starts at the corniche and is sheltered, but do make your way around the side alleys for some surprises.

There were once 2 forts defending Mutrah, but only this one remains after the other one was demolished in the 1970s to build the port. Mutrah Fort was built by the Portuguese in the late 16th century and is an easy staircase up for another perspective of the corniche.

The corniche runs along a good stretch of the coast, which would be a great place to walk or jog during the cooler months. I drove along this stretch and there were parking lots to stop and enjoy the sea breeze.
