Norway Road Trip Photo Gallery - Alesund

After all the natural scenery coming up from Bergen, it is time for a break and head back into an urban environment.

Today's Alesund shows the reconstruction efforts from a 1904 fire that destroyed the town centre. Adopting an Art Nouveau style, the architectural work was heavily influenced by the German Jugendstil movement but complemented with local folklore additions.

First stop is the park at Mount Aksla, which was built in 1885. You can drive up from the city or hike up a 418-step staircase. The public terrace offers a panoramic view of the city at the edge of a peninsula and surrounded by water and islands.

This part of Norway can also see a flood of tourists when the cruises are in town.

Drive back into town and park your car. Explore the town centre and all its Art Nouveau on foot.

Kongens Gate is the pedestrian shopping street but besides looking for ways to spend your money, look around the buildings for a taste of Art Nouveau.

Across on the other side of the harbour, I explored the streets around Alesund Church, rebuilt in brick and opened in 1909.

Today's church uses concrete and Norwegian marble and stands at the same location as another brick church from 1854 that was burned down.
