Oman Photo Gallery - Ibra

Oman Flag

Ibra is a good midday pit stop on the drive from Nizwa to Sur, and the nearest big town to the Wahiba Sands. Roads are well-paved with fairly light traffic although there are many speed cameras along the way.

Ibra is part of the old trade route between the interior and Sur, and was once famous for its horses. Stop at the crumbling old quarter of Al Qanaatir just south of the town. The once grand buildings here reflected the wealth from both agriculture as well as trade with Zanzibar.

The old gate into this old town starts on the other side of the dried-out riverbed.

Islamic architectural style places high importance to doors, which are elaborately decorated facing the outside. The wood is usually imported from India or Africa, and local carpenters carve out floral patterns.
