Reading Buses Open Day 2026 (June 28)

On June 28, 2026, Reading Buses hosted an open day event at their depot on Great Knolls Street near the main train station. Many modern buses as well as a few vintage ones were on-site with most allowing visitors to board and explore. There were also activities available such as a bus ride through the wash (1.5 pounds), control room visits (3 pounds), and vintage bus rides.

A free shuttle makes the short journey between the depot and the town centre every 20 minutes.

The event takes place over a fairly large area inside the depot with buses parked in formation.

A long line of people were waiting to board a bus that would go through the wash.

This 1976 Bristol VRT was 1 of 50 built for Reading Transport. It served until 1988 when it encountered an accident and never returned to service again.

#47 was built for Reading Corporation Transport in 1935 with an AEC chassis and Park Royal body. The town had purchased AEC Regent double-decker buses between 1933 and 1957. The metal-frame body is a first for Park Royal, with previous buses using timber with aluminum or steel panels. Due to a low railway bridge, Reading's buses had to be reduced height compared to the standard.

Out on the street, 2 vintage buses were offering tours, with the green one being a bit more special as its steering wheel is on the left.
